The square 2752 × 2752 size fits every iPad in both orientations. For an exact fit in one orientation: 13-inch iPad Pro and iPad Air 2752 × 2064 (landscape) or 2064 × 2752 (portrait); 11-inch iPad and iPad Air 2360 × 1640 or 1640 × 2360.

Why is the square size the default?

iPadOS shows the wallpaper in portrait and landscape. A square image covers both, so nothing important is cut off when you rotate the iPad.
